SketchPoint 9 – Gallus Kapelle

Sculptures in the Founding District of St.Gallen

In the year 612, Gallus stumbled near the Mühlegg Gorge and fell into a thorn bush. He took this as a sign and subsequently built his first hermitage on this spot. Gallus and his subsequent companions built a hermitage dedicated to Mary and the Burgundian saints Desiderius and Mauritius, whose relics he had brought with him. Gallus is not only the founder of the Abbey of St.Gallen; he is also the namesake of the city of St. Gallen. At the southwestern end of this courtyard, one should also sketch the Otmar Fountain and, rising above the rooftops, the two towers of the collegiate church. Otmar was an important abbot of the Abbey of St. Gallen in the 8th century.
