How to use gouache and mixed media for Urban Sketching

This workshop is focused on gouache technique for urban sketching, combining the use of other materials, such as colored pencils, graphite pencil and crayons. The use of different materials allows to offer vibrant drawings and amazing textures. The goal is to use layers of gouache paint and add details, strokes and textures with other materials on top.

We will also review the colored pencils technique, and how to combine with other materials. At the same time we will explore different types of composition and visual reading rythms.

In this workshop participants will:
  • Discover how to apply the use of gouache and mixed media techniques in urban sketching.
  • Learn about how to use gouache paint in layers and mixing dry techniques such a color pencils, fatty crayons, graphite pencil, etc.
  • How to use a reduced color palette and how to match different textures of solid and line color.
  • Understand different rhythms in your sketching plan (does it mean: when planning your sketch?) (lines of visual reading).
  • Play with different examples of composition.
