«Facade show»

Where houses are built particularly close to one another, there are often exciting facade sections with box-like structures. We decode such a facade ensemble in Bern's old town and transfer the three-dimensional objects in front of us into our two-dimensional sketchbook world of lines and surfaces.

We first look for the large basic shapes (the house walls) and gradually add the smaller shapes such as windows and doors (which can also be reduced to lines and surfaces). It's always about taking a closer look, because we want to abstract, but at the same time, of course, we want to capture the characteristic shapes and details.

We start with loose "half-blind drawings" to get to know our motif. Little by little we work in more detail and switch back and forth between lines and surfaces. Finally, we will have time to incorporate these "finger exercises" into a longer, more detailed drawing.

  • Watercolour sketchbook or sketchpad (page size at least DIN A4). The paper should be suitable for wet techniques. The paper grammage (the paper thickness) should ideally be between 180 gsm and 300 gsm.
