Marie-Odile Mourel

Marie-Odile Mourel likes to capture the present moment, to be moved, to enjoy the light and life of a street scene, all of which she transcribes in her notebooks. Her aim is to create colorful images, preferably invented! Sharing is essential, and she leads the "Croqueurs du mercredi" group, which meets every 1st Wednesday of the month in Franche-Comté. She gives mini-workshops at travel journal events and organizes stays for groups of a dozen people in Brittany, Ile de Ré, Franche-Comté and Drôme Provençale.

An "uninhibited" approach to life drawing

I offer an "uninhibited" approach to life drawing, open to all public, experienced artists and beginners alike. The essential thing, which is neither the quality of the line nor the mastery of color, lies in creating a page that tells the story of a moment and an emotion. I suggest drawing a picture that is creative, lively and rich in color. Occasionally I use collage and insert pop-ups to add visual interest. This added element will be discussed and encouraged in the workshop.

Key skills:
  • Keep track of and tell a story, through drawing, collage and text, from a moment caught on the spot in Neuchâtel
  • Draw what you see, feel and hear, without questioning or taking yourself too seriously
  • Experiment with new colors and their interactions
  • Insert collage elements
  • Be happy and proud of the page you've created
  • For uninhibited drawing: don't get stuck on the expected result, don't take yourself too seriously, accept (temporary) failure. Implement tips and tricks to make your page lively and colorful in spite of everything.

Suggested material:
  • A watercolor sketchbook without spirals (preferably landscape format)
  • A box of watercolors
  • At least 2 wash brushes (1 fine and 1 coarse)
  • Very fine permanent markers (Staedtler pigment liner 0.05 or 1 or Micron)
  • POSCA white marker, fine or medium point (not mandatory)
  • Water bottle and small pot with lid for water
  • Drawing pliers
  • Glue (stick or tube)
  • Rags
  • Scissors
