Brindarica Bose

Brindarica Bose (Brinda) has been a passionate urban sketcher for 30 years. Born in India, she is living in Switzerland with her family for almost two decades. She works part-time as an art teacher in Migros Klubschule (Miduca) for the last 9 years and gives classes for watercolors, urban sketching and freehand sketching. She was appointed as a workshop instructor at the Swiss Urban sketchers Symposium in 2021 and 2022. Brinda loves to spice up her drawings with intense colors and sketch ‘on the go’. Her favorite medium is watercolors. She takes her colors and paper in snow, sea and sand and prefers working in a ‘loose style’, and ‘speed- sketches’ whenever she gets the chance. Brinda loves to teach and share her passion for urban sketching and volunteers to teach art to refugees with Integrations Amt in Wohlen, and underprivileged children (online, with Robin Hood Academy, India). She is also a writer and a publisher.

Speed Sketching with Watercolours and Pencils

In this workshop, the participant will learn how to speed-sketch with watercolors on location. This workshop will demonstrate how not to micro-manage when painting on location and use techniques like ‘quick wash’, ‘wet-in-wet’, and ‘flat brush swipe’ to produce colorful urban sketches. Achieving an optimal speed is the key. Also, a good judgment of where to leave the ‘paper-whites’ is necessary to maintain transparency while painting with watercolors. In the end, the participant will learn with pastels, pens, or charcoals, how a few key areas can be accentuated to wrap up the sketch.

Key skills:
  • How to use colors boldly and speed-sketch
  • How to use ‘contrast’ and ‘paper-whites’ in watercolours
  • How to add a few dark lines with a black pen and accentuate

Suggested material:
  • A3 or A4 watercolour papers with a hardboard
  • Flat brush nr. 10 or 12
  • High pigment watercolours
  • Black waterproof pen
  • Stool to sit
  • Water container
  • Cap and weather-appropriate accessories (an umbrella if it rains)
