Michel Dufourd

After five years of training at the Decorative Arts School of Geneva, I earned my degree in graphic design, a profession I have been practicing for over 30 years. I have also worked as a storyboard artist for films and TV films, taught storyboard and visual storytelling at HEAD (Geneva), and created award-winning animated films in festivals. I have a long practice of drawing, particularly urban sketching, whether in my hometown or during my travels.

Urban Sketching and Composition: Setting the City in Scene

Workshop language: French

The goal is to help participants master the fundamental elements that make a sketch more dynamic and effective.

In summary, we will cover:

  • Understanding the dynamic composition of an urban sketch.
  • Mastering essential elements (masses, volumes, shadows, perspective, leading lines, values, and atmospheric perspective).
  • Improving the reading and analysis of the urban landscape, choosing the viewpoint to highlight the most important elements of the sketch.
  • Practicing capturing the essence of a place quickly, focusing on the main subject and simplifying details while maintaining visual strength.

Suggested material:

  • The usual materials for urban sketching (sketchbook or watercolor block, permanent fine liner pen, graphite pencil or other, waterproof ink pen, or other tools of your choice, folding seat, water, watercolor, etc.)
  • Add a regular sheet of paper (A4) for thumbnail sketches and experimentation.
